Judiciary is the organ of the government which settles disputes through interpretation of laws.

This means that a person can appeal to a higher court if they believe that the judgment passed by the lower court is not just.

The duties of the government to uphold the Right to Food include providing for the poor who cannot afford basic meals; taking care of the elderly, widows, disabled and children who might not be able to earn a livelihood; and, ensuring that no one dies due to malnutrition or hunger.
The phrase “Hungry stomachs, overflowing godowns! We will not accept it !!” relates to the photo essay on the Right to Food (on page 61) because it highlights the droughts in Rajasthan and Orissa in 2001 when millions faced acute shortage of food even though government godowns were overflowing with grain which was being eaten away by rats. The People’s Union of Civil Liberties filed a PIL in the Supreme Court against the guilty state governments who were then directed to provide more employment, food at cheaper rates and mid-day meals for children. In this sad situation of “hunger amidst plenty”, the filed PIL helped bring relief to many.

The Legal system can be divided into 2 branches, criminal law and civil law.

The legal system in India is divided into two branches: Criminal Law and Civil Law.

Independent judiciary means that the judiciary is not under government and does not act on its behalf.

1. Acquit: The strong case in favour of Ravi led the High Court to acquit him of all charges of guilt that the Trial Court had levied on him.
2. To appeal: The women’s organization lent strong support to the domestic maid to appeal against charges of theft that her employer had accused her of.
3. Compensation: The state government paid compensation to the victims’ families after an unfortunate train accident that killed hundreds.
4. Eviction: The company’s claims to land occupied by slum-dwellers led to the poor people’s eviction from their homes, which were bull-dozed by municipal authorities.
5. Violation: The judiciary takes stringent action against any violation of Fundamental Rights.

Law is a system of rules that are created and enforced through social or governmental institutions to regulate behavior.

Law is a system of rules, usually imposed through a Government or Institution and is applied to govern a group people. It shapes politics, economics and society in numerous ways.

Civil law deals with any harm or injury to rights of individuals while criminal law deals with the cases of theft, harassing, murder, etc.

To appeal means to file a petition before a higher court.

Story on the theme, “Justice delayed is justice denied” is as follows:

• Ram is a poor man who took a loan of Rs. 1,00,000 from a moneylender for the marriage of his daughter. When he was coming back, a thief snatched the bag of money from him. He screamed and luckily the people of the society helped him to take his bag from the thief.
• After this the bag first went to the police custody and the case took a long time in the court due to which Ram could not get the money on time and the marriage of his daughter was cancelled due to which he was mentally harassed.

Appellate system means that a person can appeal to a higher court if he/she is not satisfied with the judgement passed by the lower court.

Supreme Court is the highest court of appeal in our country.

Constitution is referred to as the supreme law of the land.

Integrated judicial system means that the decisions made by the higher courts are binding on the lower courts.

Violation means breaking a law or encroaching someone’s Fundamental Rights.

This refers to the court declaring that a person is not guilty of the crime for which he/she was tried by the court.
