Persome has lost patience with her brother. He remains out in the cold without supper to help either Marie's sick mother or Mere Gringoire. He has sold his property, his furniture and spent all his savings to help the needy in the parish. Now he has sold his silver salt cellars to help Mere Gringoire to pay her rent. Persome feels that people are misusing her brother's generosity. He has become the dupe of every idle vagabond or lying old woman in the parish.
