Time is very important in history. Events of history can be written with time and place only. We understand time by associating it with date, month and year. For e.g., Thursday, $5th$ November, $1968$. In the world, time (date-line) is associated with the birth of Jesus Christ, the founder of Christianity We call it $A.D. —$ Anno Domini means after the birth of Christ. For e.g., $1947 A.D$. means $1947$ years after the birth of Jesus Christ. In the same way, the period before the birth of Jesus Christ is called $B.C$. (Before Christ). For e.g., The time span of the $3rd$ century $B.C.$ means $300$ years before the birth of Jesus Christ. Very often, chronology is written $C.E$. (Common Era) instead of $A.D$. and $B.C.E$. (Before Common Era) instead of $B.C..$

Articles carved or written on stones are called inscriptions. We can learn history from the inscriptions.
Some inscriptions have also been found on metals. The kings got their orders inscribed (carved) for conversing with people.
Many kings and queens of ancient times inscribed the information of their kingdom, victories, religions and culture on the stone.
This type of inscriptions have survived for a long time i.e. they are long lasting.

In ancient times humans used Tadpatras and Bhojpatras for writing. They are called manuscripts. Tadpatra means manuscripts written on the leaf of a palm tree. Bhojpatra means manuscripts written on the thin bark of a birch tree found in Himalayas. From the manuscripts such as Tadpatra and Bhojpatra, we get information of the ancient language and the lifestyle of people. We get information about religious customs and traditions, social beliefs, kings’ lifestyle, science, education, medicines and animals from them. Manuscripts are preserved in temples and monasteries. Their texts are found in Sanskrit, Prakrit and Tamil languages. The writings of poems, dramas, stories and epics have also been found on Tadpatras and Bhojpatras.
