For e.g., $1947 A.D$. means $1947$ years after the birth of Jesus Christ. In the same way, the period before the birth of Jesus Christ is called $B.C$. (Before Christ). For e.g., The time span of the $3rd$ century $B.C.$ means $300$ years before the birth of Jesus Christ. Very often, chronology is written $C.E$. (Common Era) instead of $A.D$. and $B.C.E$.
