Question 13 Marks
Write about the main components of a map as well as about its scales.
Answer
There are three main components of a map :
$(1)$ Direction,
$(2)$ Scale and
$(3)$ Conventional signs.
Scale means the ratio between the distance of any two points on the map and the actual distance between the same two points on the surface of the earth. The scale $1 \ cm = 100 \ km$ means the distance of $1 \ cm$ on the map is equal to actual distance $100 \ km$ on the surface of the earth. In the scale above $‘A$ is written on $‘0’$ and $‘100’$ on $‘B’$. There is a distance of $1 \ cm$ between $‘A$ and $‘B’$ on the map. On the basis of this scale it can be said that the distance of $1 \ cm$ in this map is equal to actual distance $100 \ km$ between the same two places on land. This is how the actual distance on the surface can be known through a scale.
