Question 33 Marks
Simplify the expression $2\left(a^2+a b\right)+3-a b$ and find Its value, when a = 5 and b =-3.
Answer
We have, $2\left(a^2+a b\right)+3-a b=2 a^2+2 a b+3-a b$
$=2 a^2+2 a b-a b+3$ [rearranging terms]
$=2 a^2+a b(2-1)+3=2 a^2+a b+3$
On putting a = 5 and b = -3 we get
The value of $2 a^2+a b+3=2(5)^2+5 \times(-3)+3$
= 2 × 5 × 5 + 5(-3) + 3
= 50 - 15 + 3 = 38
Hence, the simplified expression is $2 a^2+a b+3$ and its required value is 38.

Question 43 Marks
What should be the value of a, if the value of $2 x^2+x-a$ equals to 5 , when $x=0$?
Answer
Given, the value of $2 x^2+x-a$ is equal to 5 i.e.
$2 x^2+x-a=5$
On putting x = 0 we get $2(0)^2+(0)-a=5$
$\Rightarrow$ 0 + 0 - a = 5 $\Rightarrow$ -a = 5 $\Rightarrow$ a = -5
Hence, the required value of a is -5.

Question 53 Marks
If a = 2 b = -2 then find the value of
(i) $a^2+b^2$$\quad$ (ii) $a^2+a b+b^2$$\quad$ (iii) $a^2-b^2$
Answer
(i) On substituting $a=2$ and $b=-2$ in $a^2+b^2$, we get
$a^2+b^2=(2)^2+(-2)^2$
= 4 + 4 = 8
(ii) On substituting $a=2$ and $b=-2$ in $a^2+a b+b^2$, we get
$a^2+a b+b^2=(2)^2+2 \times(-2)+(-2)^2$
= 4 - 4 + 4 = 4
(iii) On substituting $a=2$ and $b=-2$ in $a^2-b^2$, we get
$a^2-b^2=(2)^2-(-2)^2=4-4=0$

Question 63 Marks
Identify terms which contain $y^2$ and give the coefficient of $y^2$
(a) $8-x y^2$
(b) $5 y^2+7 x$
(c) $2 x^2 y-15 x y^2+7 y^2$
Answer
(a) In the expression $8-x y^2$, the term which contains $y^2$ is $-x y^2$, so the coefficient of $y^2$ is $-x$.
(b) In the expression $5 y^2+7 x$, the term which contains $y^2$ is $5 y^2$, so the coefficient of $y^2$ is 5.
(c) In the expression $2 x^2 y-15 x y^2+7 y^2$, the terms which contain $y^2$ are $-15 x y^2$ and $7 y^2$, so the coefficients of $y^2$ are $-15 x$ and 7 , respectively.
