Question 11 Mark
Factorise the expression $2 a^3-3 a^2 b+5 a b^2-a b$.
Answer
We have, $2 a^3-3 a^2 b+5 a b^2-a b$
In this expression, only variable $a$ is common.
$
\begin{aligned}
\Rightarrow 2 \times a & \times a \times a-3 \times a \times a \times b+5 \times a \times b \times b-a \times b \\
& =a(2 \times a \times a-3 \times a \times b+5 \times b \times b-b) \\
& =a\left(2 a^2-3 a b+5 b^2-b\right)
\end{aligned}

Question 21 Mark
Find the common factor of $x^2 y$ and $-x y^2$.
Answer
We have to factorise both terms,
$
\begin{aligned}
x^2 y & =x \times x \times y \\
\text { and }-x y^2 & =-x \times y \times y=-1 \times x \times y \times y
\end{aligned}
$
Common factor in both terms is $x y$.
