An Indian soldier serves the country by being a part of the Army, Navy or Air Force. He looks after the security of the country. He guards the borders so that no foreign enemy or terrorist can enter into the country and harm it. His life is full of hardships as he has to bear the heat, cold, rain and snow. His life is always at risk and he hardly gets to be with his family. In times of war his family is always tensed about his well-being. A soldier has to learn to use the latest fighting equipment. During wars the soldiers have to live in trenches and tents without proper facility of food, water and sanitation. During natural disasters like earthquakes and floods, the teams of soldiers help out as rescue workers and see that people are shifted to safety. A soldier looks smart in his uniform and commands respect. I would like to be a soldier when I grow up.

I visited a library with my sister as she is a member there. We entered into a big building. There were two big halls where thousands of books were stacked up neatly on the shelves. The shelves were numbered and the subjects were written in bold letters. There were drawers with cards bearing the names of the books, the writers and subjects. There were stands full of different newspapers, weeklies and monthly magazines. I saw people young and elderly sitting and reading in total silence. The librarian was helping people find books. She was strict about maintaining pin drop silence. There were people who were carrying books home for reading and some were bringing books back and taking new ones in exchange. My sister told me that many times during the exam she came here to study as there was a lot of peace. Every year one has to pay the membership fee. You have to return the books on time or there will be a fine. I really enjoyed my trip to the library.

Pollution means adding to the environment, substances that are harmful and not required. It is a global problem today. There are different types of pollution- noise, air, water, land and space. Rapid and unplanned urbanisation and industrialisation have caused pollution. Land pollution takes place due to use of harmful chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Water pollution is caused by sewage and effluents thrown into water bodies. Air pollution is caused by smoke and harmful gases. Noise pollution has increased due to factories and vehicles. Pollution has caused the depletion of the ozone layer and usage of mineral coal and oil has led to its near exhaustion Global warming has increased the temperature on the earth and created an imbalance in the environment leading to change of seasons, unseasonal rains, melting of ice and overflowing of water bodies, submergence of islands and coastal areas. We must take firm and quick steps to fight pollution by growing trees and using renewable source of energy.

The computer is one of the most intelligent inventions of man. It is a machine which can carry out automatic calculation, store data and perform logical operations. The computer has a device which stores data. The earlier computers were very huge, expensive and performed only certain functions. However, today the computers are many times more capable, cost effective, light in weight and occupy less space. They also fit into mobile phones. The computers are very useful to people who are businessmen, bankers, students, government servants and houses wives. Though these computers are easy to use, they are totally dependent on electricity and internet facility. If these facilities are not available, it is not possible to use the computer. Virus is the biggest enemy of the computers. If the virus hits the computer, the computers cannot be operated. Everyone should know how to use a computer. It is a necessity and not a luxury anymore.

Price rise means increase in the cost of living. This situation arises because the population increases and there isn't enough for everyone. Price rise is a manmade problem. As the income of the people increases they demand for things for their needs. The cost of all the items keeps increasing. Producers of goods and services want more profits so they increase the price. For example a farmer increases the price of his food crop, while a mill owner increases the price of the cloth he makes Price rise has also increased in India because of increase in the price of fuel products for transportation and running of machinery. When prices increase the rich people are not much affected only the poor and middle class suffer. From the time our country became free from British rule we have not been able to control price rise. If prices are controlled people can buy more things with their income and can lead a happy and satisfied life. The government must bring down the prices in the country.

Trees are like saints, they bear the sun's heat and give us shade. They eat dirty manure and give us sweet fruits. They bear the weight of animals and birds living on them but they are happy to do so. They are cut down by us for wood but they never fight with us, Trees provide us with oxygen and take in carbon dioxide. They help us to reduce pollution and provide us with life sustaining oxygen. The fibre providing plants give us the raw material for our clothes. A group of tree ave grown themselves form a forest and become a home for the beasts and birds. The trees maintain the humidity in the atmosphere and bring down the temperature. They help to attract rain. They hold on to the soil and stop soil erosion. They provide us with many things like fruits, vegetables, medicines, wood for construction and for fuel. The trees provide the greenery to the earth and make it look very lush and appealing to the eyes. The colourful flowers on the plants and trees add to the beauty of nature.

I am so ashamed to be living in a country which has a rich culture but is totally dirty as people litter left, right and centre. However I am happy, I have parents who have taught me from the time I could understand that I should not throw garbage and spoil the cleanliness of a place While going to school, I find our van driver spitting a number of times on the road. I have tried to tell him not to do so but he only laughs. He says he cannot swallow what he chews as it will make him ill. He doesn't mind if others fall ill by his spitting. My friends eat sweets and chocolates and throw the wrappers on the roads and school grounds. No one bothers to put them into a dustbin. I wish they don't litter. I have seen people clean their houses and throw their garbage and leftovers outside their house. I wish the Swachh Bharat programme will change people's way of thinking and make them understand the importance of cleanliness. I wish to see a clean and green city of which I am proud of. When we go abroad we are extra careful. We don't litter because we are scared of the law and the fines we would have to pay We should be proud of our cities and villages and keep them clean like we want our houses to be. We keep our hearts clean so that God can live there so we need to keep our surroundings clean so that God also lives there.

A girl or a boy should be equal to all parents. Men and women are equal so their number should also be the same. However, we find that compared to boys, there are less number of girls. Parents also prefer to have a boy child. Since ages girls have become victims to child marriages, dowry and rape. They were killed by drowning them in a pot of milk. Many girls don't go to school and are totally uneducated. All religions teach people that both men and women are equal then we should treat women with respect. No girl should be killed before she is born. We need to educate people that women help to bring up a family No one should treat girls badly or kill them. Today girls are not safe, the horrible crime of rape has become widespread. Small innocent girls are being kidnapped, raped and murdered. Girls no longer feel safe. The government must take strict action against those who commit such crimes. Save the girl child today.

We cannot live without water. About 70% of our body is made up of water. The earth is a blue planet but most of the water is in the sea and it is salty so we cannot use it for drinking, house work, factories and farms. When the sun shines the water vapour goes up, forms clouds and comes down as rain. This rain then fills up the lakes, rivers, ponds and seas. We do not look after this beautiful gift of nature, we dirty and pollute the water by throwing sewage and harmful chemicals in it. Most of the factories throw their waste into the rivers.. People also waste a lot of water. There is very little fresh water in the world. We should not waste water. We should use only as much as we need. We should not let our taps remain open when we don't need water. The drinking water pipes and drainage pipes should not mix up with one another. We should reuse water like when we clean our cars and houses we should not throw away the water in the gutters but give it to the plants.

If people work hard they will succeed. All inventions and discoveries made since ancient time have required hard work. When we do our work properly it is equally to praying to God. Every person has been allotted work from their childhood. As a student my work is to study well and do my homework and complete my projects. If I do not put in an effort or do hard work then I will not do well. Many people are lazy and they would like someone else to do their work there is no short cut to success. When we don't do our work on time then it will keep on piling up and we will never reach our goal. Every man and woman does work according to one's liking and ability. My Dad works hard in his office so that we have a better life. My mother who is a housewife also works a lot to see that the house runs well. A country will do well if the people who form the government do their duty truthfully and with devotion. Even sportsmen have to practice a lot to become perfect. Everyone's work is sacred and important so just as we worship with attention and respect, we should do our work in the same manner to reach our goal.

Today's life is a busy one. We are caught in a routine of tasks and there is hardly any free or leisure time. If we do get some free time we like to play sports, watch television or go to the movies. Unfortunately the habit of reading has just been neglected by the people. The habit of reading is an excellent pastime and it not only provides information but is also an activity that can give us a lot of pleasure. This habit should be formed when we as children are able to read and write. Then it will become a part of our personality. Today computer games and TV programmes have taken over our lives that we don't feel like opening and reading a book. We read our lessons only because we are forced to do our homework. Books provide us with rich information on different subjects. We cannot meet people whom we want to know because they are not near us or have passed away but books can help us to keep in touch with their works and know more about them. Reading in any language helps us to improve our language skills. Parents and teachers should encourage students to read books. There should be good libraries in school and parents should encourage their children to buy books and have a home library. They can share their books with their friends. One should not wait for a special time to start reading. Just pick up a good book in your spare time and enjoy reading it.

Every day we see and hear of accidents taking place around us. I feel very scared of the heavy traffic and the way some people drive by over taking from the wrong side or just driving at speed which is not right. It seems that people avoid following rules which have been laid down. Traffic rules should be taught in school so that from an early age children will learn to follow the rules and will not drive in a rash manner. The traffic police also needs to be strict Minors like me should not be allowed to drive till we grow up and get our licenses. If people do not have the manners to drive properly then they need to be fined or punished so that they do not commit the same mistake again. If they still don't understand then their driving licence should be taken away or their vehicles should be taken away by the police. People should respect traffic signals and signs as they are kept for their own safety. We should not jump the red signal. People who have to move around on foot should walk on the footpaths and cross the roads at the zebra crossings. People should learn to drive carefully so that they reach home safely. It is well said better late than never.

We often hear from our parents and elder brothers and sisters of them being part of social network groups and they show us different posts, photographs and videos that are posted on them. They are connected through the internet on their mobile phones. There is social networking in our school also. We have been given email identities and our school syllabus and notes reach us through a social network. There are many websites that support social networking. The Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp are very common sites. We hear about them from our parents and elder brothers and sisters. Even children now own their own cell phones and are connected to such social networking groups. Families and relatives keep in touch with one another by being connected to a group. The group can get instant messages and news. Most of these sites are free so people have to only pay for internet connectivity. Through some websites people are able to connect with childhood friends with whom they have lost all contact with. We have to be careful about such sites also as personal information and photographs can be hacked and misused by strangers.

My father is a railway employee. As a result, I get to see many places other than Nagpur where I stay. Sometimes he takes all of us on a holiday. I realise that I like travelling a great deal. I have seen more than thirty cities and towns in India. Some of the places I have visited are Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Ooty, Mysuru, Bengaluru, Agra, Jammu, Mahabaleshwar, Dehradun, Ambala and even Thiruvananthapuram.
The one thing that I gather from all my travels is that India is a land of a rich variety. I have seen snow-capped peaks, coastal regions, the deltas of the Sunderbans, the interiors of India where the climate is extreme, hill stations, plateaus, lowlands and even the North Indian plains. I find that my outlook on life has considerably broadened due to my extensive travelling. I can get along with people of all types. I do not feel distaste or dislike for habits that people of different communities or regions have.
This is what travel does. It broadens the mind, improves our outlook on life and makes us persons with a better understanding of varied cultures and creeds. Besides being exciting, travel is always very refreshing. Staying always in one place, seeing the same streets and people every day is quite monotonous and obviously boring. Travel enriches the mind and makes a person happier, more accommodating and better equipped to deal with a variety of experiences.
When I grow up, I would like to visit countries in faraway places. So far I have travelled only by train. Later on, I hope to travel by ship and by plane. I am sure that my travels will do me a world of good.

‘Reading maketh a full man,’ says a famous saying. This means that it is the reading habit which helps a man to develop and enrich his personality.
A good book not only entertains but teaches. It is not possible for a person to know everything. Books help us to increase our store of knowledge. If a book is written well, it can also provide us with pleasure.
Books are our never failing friends. Ruskin has called books, ‘King’s Treasuries’. The treasure contained in these treasures are knowledge, noble thoughts and high ideals. Books relieve us of our sad moments and dull monotony of leisure hours and fill our hearts with hope and courage and cheer. Poor indeed is the man who does not like to read.
One should read books on a variety of topics such as travel, history, biography, autobiography, science and morals. Such kind of variety of reading will help one grow into a fuller man. Magazines and newspapers also provide a variety of reading material. They help us to keep our knowledge up-to-date. Poetry also should not be neglected. It provides us with noble thoughts and high ideals. Prose enriches the mind, poetry enriches the heart.
Teachers and parents should encourage and nourish the young to develop the art of reading more and more.

Trees occupy an important place in the life of man. They give us so many good things and yet expect nothing in return.
Trees give us fruits for food and flowers for pleasure and worship. They provide us timber for our houses and furniture. They provide us wood for fuel. Many trees provide us with medicinal products such as quinine and eucalyptus oil. In fact, many medicines that we use, ultimately come to us through trees and vegetation.
Trees play an important role in purifying the air around us. They take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen that sustains life. Thus, they help reduce the degree of air pollution.
Trees are very necessary for good rainfall. Trees attract rain bearing clouds and prevent soil erosion and help to maintain a balance in the ecosystem.
Governments all over the world have realised the importance of trees. Here, in India, we have an extensive tree plantation programme known as ‘Vanmahotsava’ every year. But government efforts alone are not sufficient. All schools, colleges and social service organisations should launch ‘tree planting’ programmes on a massive scale. This is the only way to ensure a happy life for future generations.

Natural calamities are very unpredictable. The science and techniques adopted to prevent loss of life and property is known as disaster management.
During floods, when the excessive water rushes into the villages or towns, turning them into ruins, we have a trained team of people who reach the affected area in time and save them. People are evacuated from their homes and taken to higher places of safety. Even the animals are taken care of. Later the damaged roads and homes are repaired to bring back life to normalcy. Even doctors are made available to help prevent any kind of waterborne epidemics.
During earthquakes, such teams are trained to shift the needy to a safer place. Help remove any person trapped beneath the rubble. Temporary shelter, food, medicines are provided. Sometimes the entire village or town need to be renovated and they use scientific methods of construction in these earthquake-prone regions.
Every government should have a special department in every state to cope up with such situations.

Global warming is a slow steady rise in the earth’s surface temperature. This has resulted in a rise of oceanic temperatures and an overall change in the earth’s atmosphere including a rise in the sea levels and variability of snowfalls. Due to the increase in the greenhouse gas resulting from pollution and emission from transportation and industrialisation. In short, human activities are responsible for global warming.
We, as citizens of the world, can do a lot to save our home-our earth. Adopt the rule- reduce, reuse and recycle. Cut down on the consumption of fuels by carpool or drive less. Tapping solar energy is a very good option. Reducing wastes will help releasing less greenhouses gases. Even turning off lights and electronic devices when not in use will have a good impact. Conserve water, because in turn you save energy used to draw water from underground. And always remember to spread awareness about global warming.

Every year we eagerly wait for the summer holidays. As this is the best time to indulge in extra-curricular activities. This year my mother suggested I learn horse riding and swimming. Two of my best friends joined me. The horse-riding sessions were in the morning. We had to get up early to be on time. Initially, I was scared of the horses, but the trainers soon taught us how to get friendly with them. We used to feed them ‘gram’ which was their favourite. First, we learnt how to tie the saddle to the horse and climb on it. Later the horse would trot for a short distance, while we learnt how to control with the reins. After a week, the trained horses began to increase their speed, and before we realised, we were riding the horses quite confidently. The swimming sessions were in the evening. Here the trained swimmers taught us the basics in the shallow area of the pool. But soon we were asked to swim in the deep, which was very scary and tiring too. We learnt to dive and float. Being with friends made the learning easy. Today, I can proudly say, I know swimming and horse riding.

Forests are home to many animals and birds. They provide a livelihood for people residing nearby. Forest products like timber, herbal medicines, honey are useful to man.
From the environmental point of view, forests help to maintain the perfect balance of the various gases in the atmosphere making it favourable for life. The harmful greenhouse gases are kept in control. Forests help the water cycle as trees extract water from the soil and release it into the atmosphere. They help bring rain. They control the atmospheric temperature. They help in prevention of floods in rivers.
Today, deforestation has become a major concern. It destroys the habitat of animals and birds. Many birds and animals are on the verge of extinction. They affect the ecosystem. Cutting of trees results in floods. The water cycle gets disturbed. Deforestation is one of the reasons of global warming.
Hence, it is advisable to understand the importance of forests and protect them to save our home – our earth.

I was very excited when my father told me that we were going to the bank. This was my first visit to a bank. We stopped at the entrance of the bank, and the first thing I noticed was a huge hoarding outside the building ‘State Bank of India’. There was a guard in uniform holding a rifle in his hands. I was initially scared, but he smiled at me and even opened the door.
When we stepped inside, I saw many counters and alert bank officials working on their computers, communicating politely with all the customers. My father brought me here to open a savings account for me. We met the authorities and filled a form, attached the required documents like the Aadhar card, electricity bill copy, etc. We submitted the papers and a bank official explained the bank proceedings to me. She showed me how money was deposited and withdrawn from the account, a machine to update the passbook. It was amazing. I saw the counter for cash withdrawal with a screen which flashed token numbers, to assure smooth functioning and avoid crowding. My father took me to the ATM machine, where he demonstrated how he could withdraw money any time of the day.

I was beautiful because my wings were colourful, unlike my cousins. This made me very special. Soon I learnt to like the other parrots. I also learnt to imitate the voices of other birds. I was very happy. I played with my friends from dawn to dusk.
One day a hunter caught me in his net and took me to market. A small boy with his parents came along and took me home. A new cage with a small door, a bowl of water, a swing and food to eat. Initially, I was happy not to search for food, a lovely boy who spoke to me lovingly. I imitated different birds and entertained my new friend. I also learnt to say a few human words. But soon I felt lonely. I longed for freedom to fly in the sky and remained sad through the day. After a few days, the boy realized my agony and set me free. I was very happy to be able to fly free but I made it a point to visit the boy once a day.

We learn many subjects like Science, Mathematics and English in school. Most of the children dread the name of ‘Maths’. But if we peep into our daily activities, we see maths all over. So let’s see, what impact this subject has in our lives. From a mobile phone to the computers, whether used in hospitals, banks, shop or designer’s studios, we see the influence of maths. Proper knowledge in maths will help you deal with all transactions. In the field of medicine, accurate measurements are a matter of life or death. Even our home kitchens use maths. Isn’t it amazing? The correct measurements of ingredients make the food tasty. Today robots are making a king-size contribution in all the fields. No engineer can make this possible without the knowledge of maths. Even the space technology, which shares all kinds of information through the internet has a base of maths. These are just a few examples where maths is used. So instead of shunning this subject, it is always better to befriend it and have fun with numbers.
