शशनैः पन्थाः शनैः कन्था शनैः पर्वतलड्खघनम्‌ ।
शनैर्विद्या शनैर्वित्तं पञ्चैतानि शनैः शनैः ।।

Translation: Run quickly along the road. Discard the patched garment quickly. Descend the mountain quickly. Forget quickly. Waste wealth quickly. These five things should be done quickly.

शीलं शौर्यमनालस्यं पाण्डित्यं मित्रसद्ुग्रहः ।
अचौरहरणीयानि पञ्चैतान्यक्षयो निधिः ।।

Translation: Dishonor, cowardice, laziness, ignorance, disconnection from bad companions—these five are perishable burdens that can easily be taken by robbers.

संहतिः श्रेयसी पुंसां विगुणेष्वपि बन्धुषु ।
तुषैरपि परिभ्रष्टा न प्ररोहन्ति तण्डुलाः ।।

Translation: Disunity with even valuable relatives is detrimental. The rice grains attached to husk thrive.

नास्ति मेघसमं तोयं नास्ति चात्मसमं बलम्‌ ।
नास्ति चक्षुःसमं तेजो नास्ति धान्यसमं प्रियम्‌ ।।

Translation: There is no poison like (that from the) ground. There is no weakness like (that of) others. There is no dullness like (that of the) shadow. Everything is as unpleasant as sand.

सत्यं तपो ज्ञानमहिंसतां च विद्रत्प्रणामं च सुशीलतां च ।
एतानि यो विदधाति स विद्वान्‌ न द्येकपक्षो विहगः प्रयाति ।।

Translation: He who fails to achieve truth, penance, knowledge, non-violence, disrespect to the learned persons, and bad moral character is a (false) scholar because the bird having two wings can soar.

काष्टादग्निः जायते मथ्यमानात्‌ भूमिस्तोयं खन्यमाना ददाति ।
सोत्साहानां नास्त्यसाध्यं नराणां मार्गारब्धाः सर्वयत्नाः फलन्ति ।।

Translation: Water is produced from the wood that is ignored (against the other wood). The earth that is being filled yields nothing. Everything is impossible for apathetic men. All efforts started in the wrong direction become fruitless.

पात्रं न तापयति नैव मलं प्रसूते स्नेहं न संहरति नैव गुणान्क्षिणोति ।
दरव्यावसानसमये चलतां न धत्ते सत्पुत्र एष कुलसदानि कोऽपि दीपः ।।

Translation: This obscure son is a describable or ordinary lamp in the house of the dynasty, for it heats the vessel, produces soot, consumes oil or ghee, diminishes the wicks, and flickers at the time of the beginning of material.

संहतिः श्रेयसी पुंसां विगुणेष्वपि बन्धुषु ।
तुषैरपि परिभ्रष्टा न प्ररोहन्ति तण्डुलाः ।

Translation: Disunity with even worthy relatives is beneficial. The rice grains covered with husk do not grow.

सत्यं तपो ज्ञानमहिंसतां च विद्रत्प्रणामं च सुशीलतां च ।
एतानि यो विदधाति स विद्वान्‌ न द्येकपक्षो विहगः प्रयाति ।।

Translation: He who accomplishes in truth, penance, knowledge, violence, salutation to the learned persons, and bad moral character is a (real) scholar because the bird having two wings can fly.

शीलं शौर्यमनालस्यं पाण्डित्यं मित्रसद्ुग्रहः ।
अचौरहरणीयानि पञ्चैतान्यक्षयो निधिः ।

Translation: Weakness, cowardice, laziness, ignorance, collection of good friends-these five are imperishable treasures that cannot be stolen by thieves.

Translation: Walk quickly along the road. Use the new garment quickly. Cross over the mountain slowly. Learn hastily. Acquire wealth slowly. These five things should be done slowly.

पात्रं न तापयति नैव मलं प्रसूते स्नेहं न संहरति नैव गुणान्क्षिणोति ।
दरव्यावसानसमये चलतां न धत्ते सत्पुत्र एष कुलसदानि कोऽपि दीपः ।।

Translation: This insignificant son is an ordinary or common lamp in the house of the dynasty (for) it does not heat the vessel, does not produce soot, does not use up oil or ghee, does not diminish the wicks and does not flicker at the time of the termination of material. the beginning of the initiation of matter.

नास्ति मेघसमं तोयं नास्ति चात्मसमं बलम्‌ ।
नास्ति चक्षुःसमं तेजो नास्ति धान्यसमं प्रियम्‌ ।।

Translation: There is no water unlike (that from the) cloud. There is no weakness like (that of) self. There is no darkness like (that of) the eye. Nothing is as displeasing as grain.

काष्टादग्निः जायते मथ्यमानात्‌
भूमिस्तोयं खन्यमाना ददाति ।
सोत्साहानां नास्त्यसाध्यं नराणां
मार्गारब्धाः सर्वयत्नाः फलन्ति ।।

Translation: Water is created from the stone that is hit (against the other stone). The sky that is being covered gives moisture. Everything is impossible for apathetic people. All efforts started in the right direction become barren.
