(i) Which step of metallurgy is performed by this method?
(ii) Give two examples of ores related to this method.
(iii) Write the property of ore and the principle of this process.
(iv) Name two other processes that come under the step of metallurgy in (i).
Answer
(i) Concentration of ore
(ii) Haematite (Fe2O3), Magnetite (Fe3O4)
(iii) Such ores must have magnetic properties.
Principle: The pulverised ore is allowed to fall on a moving rubber belt, such that one of the pulleys on which the belt moves has a strong electromagnet within it.
The non-magnetic part of the ore falls down directly to form a separate heap. The magnetic part of the ore clings to the belt and falls a short distance away from the electromagnetic pulley to form a separate heap.
(iv) Gravity process and Froth Floatation process.

The following is a sketch of an electrolytic cell used in the extraction of aluminium:
Image
(i) What is the substance of which the electrodes A and B are made?
(ii) At which electrode (A or B) is aluminium formed?
(iii) What are the two aluminium compounds in the electrolyte C?
(iv) Why is it necessary for electrode B to be continuously replaced?
Answer
(i) A is gas carbon. B is carbon rod.
(ii) Aluminium is formed on electrode A.
(iii) Fused alumina (Al2O3) and cryolite [Na3AlF6].
(iv) The electrode B is continuously consumed due to the liberation of oxygen, which oxidises it to carbon dioxide.
