Question 12 Marks
Some properties of sulphuric acid are listed below. Choose the role played by sulphuric acid as A, B, C or D which is responsible for the reactions (i) to (iv). Some role/s may be repeated.
(a) Dilute acid (b) Dehydrating agent
(c) Non-volatile acid (d) Oxidising agent
(i) $CuSO _4 \cdot 5 H _2 O \xrightarrow{\text { conc. } H _2 SO _4} CuSO _4+5 H _2 O$
(ii) $S + H _2 SO _4$ (conc.) $\rightarrow 3 SO _2+2 H _2 O$
(iii) $NaNO _3+ H _2 SO _4$ (conc.) $\xrightarrow{<200^{\circ} C } NaHSO _4+ HCl$
(iv) $MgO + H _2 SO _4 \rightarrow MgSO _4+ H _2 O$
Answer
(a) Dilute acid - (iv), (b) Dehydrating agent - (i),
(c) Non-volatile acid - (iii), (d) Oxidising agent - (ii)

Question 22 Marks
(a) Concentrated sulphuric acid should be kept in air-tight bottles. Why?
(b) Write a balanced equation for the preparation of sulphur dioxide by the action of hot conc. sulphuric acid on sulphur.
Answer
(a) Conc. sulphuric acid is highly hygroscopic in nature. Thus, it absorbs large amount of moisture from air and changes to dilute form. Thus, it must be kept in air-tight bottles.
(b) $S +2 H _2 SO _4$ (conc.) $\xrightarrow{\text { heat }} 3 SO _2(g)+2 H _2 O$

Question 32 Marks
An important industrial reaction is represented by the equation 2SO2 + O2 → 2SO3. The formation of sulphur trioxide is exothermic. State the conditions of temperature and state the name of the catalyst required for the above reaction to take place.
Answer
(i) The mixture of SO2 and O2 should be in the ratio of 2: 1 by volume and free from all impurities.
(ii) A catalyst should be used. Platinised asbestos or vanadium pentoxide is the catalyst at 450 °C.
