Question 13 Marks
State the difference between a balanced equation and an unbalanced equation.
Answer
In a balanced chemical equation, the number of atoms of each element on both sides of the chemical equation are same, (i.e. number of atoms of each element on the reactant side is equal to the number of atoms of the same element on the product side.)
Example:
$2 Mg + O _2 \rightarrow 2 MgO$
In an unbalanced chemical equation the number of atoms of each element on both sides of the chemical equation are not equal. It is also called as a skeletal equation.
Example: $Mg + O _2 \rightarrow MgO$
