Question
(a) An electrostatic field line is a continuous curve. ie., a field line cannot have sudden breaks. Why not?
(b) Explain why two field lines never cross each other at any point.

Answer

(a) A stationary electric field line is a continuous curve and no field line can break suddenly, because it will not show an electric field at the breaking point.(b) Two field lines can never intersect each other. Since there will be two tangent lines at the intersection point. This means that there are two parts of the electric field at that point, which is not possible.
