Question
(a) But-2-ene have two geometrical isomers while but-1-ene not why?
(b) A compound having two carbon atoms decolourises Bayer's reagent but do not react with ammonium silver nitrate. Name the compound.

Answer

(a) In but-2-ene, two different groups are attached to the double bonded carbon atom whereas in but-1-ene two identical groups are attached to one double bonded carbon atom, hence geometric isomerism is not possible in it.
(b) This hydrocarbon is ethylene because it reacts with Bayer's reagent (1% aq. KMnO4) but reacts with ammonia, not will AgNO3, because it does not contain active hydrogen.
