Question
A rectangular grassy lawn measuring 40m by 25m is to be surrounded externally by a path which is 2m wide. Calculate the cost of leveling the path at the rate of Rs. 8.25 per square metre.

Answer

We have,
Length $A B=40 m$ and breadth $B C=25 m$
Area of lawn $A B C D=40 m \times 25 m=1000 m^2$
Length $P Q=(40+2+2) m =44 m$
Breadth $QR =(25+2+2) m =29 m$
Area of PQRS $=44 m \times 29 m=1276 m^2$
Now, Area of the path = Area of PQRS - Area of the lawn ABCD
$=1276 m^2-1000 m^2=276 m^2$
Rate of leveling the path = Rs. 8.25 per $m ^2$
Cost of leveling the path $=$ Rs. $(8.25 \times 276)=$ Rs. 2277
