Question
An organic compound $A$ has the molecular formula $\ce{C_8H_{16}O_8}$. It gets hydrolysed with dilute sulphuric acid and gives a carboxylic acid $B$ and an alcohol $C$. Oxidation of $C$ with chromic acid also produced $B. C$ on dehydration reaction gives but $-1-$ ene. Write equations for the reactions involved.

Answer

$\ce{A = CH_3CH_2CH_2COOCH_2CH_2CH_2CH_3}  \ ($Butyl butanoate$)$.
$\ce{B = CH_3CH_2CH_2COOH}  \ ($Butanoic acid$)$.
$\ce{C = CH_3CH_2CH_2CH_2OH}  \ ($Butan $-1-$ ol$)$.
$\ce{CH_3CH_2CH_2COOCH_2CH_2CH_2CH_{3 }\xrightarrow{\text{H}_{2}\text{O}/\text{H}^{+}}}$ $\ce{CH_3CH_2CH_2COOH + CH_3CH_2CH_2CH_2OH}.$
$\ce{CH_3CH_2CH_2CH_2OH \xrightarrow{\text{CrO}_{2}} CH_3CH_2CH_2COOH}.$
$\ce{CH_3CH_2CH_2 CH_2OH \xrightarrow{\text{H}_{2}\text{SO}_{4}} CH_3CH_2CH=CH_2.}$
