Question
भो चारुदत्त, धनिकस्त आगतः ।

Answer

O Charudatta ! Your creditor has come.
Explanation: This statement has been taken from 'परितुष्टा यास्यति' a part of the 5th Act of the play 'मृच्छकटिकम्' composed by the great poet Shudraka. This statement was spoken by Vidushaka to Charudatta while giving him the news of arrival of Vasantsena. Kumbhalika, the servant of Vasantsena asks some indirect questions to Vidushaka before giving the news of the arrival of Vasantsena. The answer to last two questions are Sena and Vasant. Then Kumbhilaka asks Vidushaka to combine these words. After combining, he speaks Senavasant. But Kumbhilaka wants him to speak Vasantsena. So he instructs him to change the order of the pada. Then Vidushaka speaks Vasantsena. This is how, Kumbhilaka makes Vidushaka speak Vasantsena. Then he gives him the news of Vasantsena's arrival. Vidushaka goes to Charudatta and tells him, "O Charudatta! Your creditor has come." Charudatta asks him who the creditor is. Then Vidushaka tells him that Vasantsena has arrived. Vidushaka thinks that Vasantsena is greedy and has come to demand something in return of the lost ornaments which she kept as a deposit with Charudatta. In fact, Charudatta had no creditor as he did not borrow anything from
anyone.
A Vidushaka is a funny character in Sanskrit plays who often speaks the bitter truth in a hilarious manner. This statement two reflects the intelligence of Vidushaka.
