Question
Complete the following equations describing nuclear decays.
(a) ${ }_{86}^{226} Ra \rightarrow \alpha+$
(b) ${ }_8^{19} O \rightarrow e^{-}+$
(c) ${ }_{90}^{228} Th \rightarrow \alpha+$
(d) ${ }_7^{12} N \rightarrow{ }_6^{12} C +$

Answer

(a) ${ }_{88}^{226} Ra \rightarrow{ }_2^4 \alpha+{ }_{86}^{222} Em$
Em (Emanation) $\equiv Rn$ (Radon)
Here, $\alpha$ particle is emitted and radon is formed.
(b) ${ }_8^{19} O \rightarrow e^{-}+{ }_9^{19} F$
Here, $e^{-} \equiv{ }_{-1}^0 \beta$ is emitted and fluorine is formed.
(c) $228 Th \rightarrow{ }_2^4 \alpha+{ }_{88}^{224} Ra$
Here, $\alpha$ particle is emitted and radium is formed.
(d) ${ }_7^{12} N \rightarrow{ }_6^{12} C +{ }_1^0 \beta$
${ }_1^0 \beta$ is $e ^{+}$(positron)
Here, $\beta^{+}$is emltted and carbon is formed.
