Question
Consider three compounds: $H _2 S, H _2 Se$ and $H _2 O$. Identify which has the highest boiling point. Justify.

Answer

Among the three compounds $H _2 O , H _2 S$ and $H _2 Se$, the first one, $H _2 O$ has the smallest molecular mass. But it has the highest B.P. of $100^{\circ} C$. B.P. of $H _2 S$ is $-60^{\circ} C$ and of $H _2 Se$ is $-41.25^{\circ} C$. The extraordinary high B.P. of $H _2 O$ is due to very strong hydrogen bonding even though it has the lowest molecular mass.
