Counselling is the happy relationship between professionally trained expert counsellor and help seeker who seeks help for his personal affair. Counselling has no fixed steps. It is a dynamic and changeable process. To understand the process of counselling, Brammer and Shortrom (1982) have given the following steps :
(1) To know the purpose of the counselee for coming: The purpose of the first step of counselling is to make counselee capable of describing his problem.
(2) Establishing effective relationship : The total counselling process depends upon the trustworthy relationship between counselor and counselee. The ability to establish rapport is essential for the success of this step.
(3) Coordination and decision of goals : This step includes clarification, limitations and goals of counselling process. This type of coordination gives map of the counselling route.
(4) Clarification of the problems : The explanation of clarification regarding problem is included in this steps the problem is clearly explained to the counselee during this process.
(5) Deal with the problems and goals : The main function of this process is to make required changes in the goal and to decide the plan for proceeding further after clarifying the nature of problem. (6) To make a work plan : New planning and new behaviour pattern should be tried before ending the counselling process under the observation of counselor.
(7) Assessment of results and end of the counselling process : The counselor has to provide his support till the counselee needs. But the counselling process ends when the counselee is ready to move ahead at his own. The decision to end the counselling process can be taken after the evaluation of the progress towards the goals of counselling. Thus, the steps of counselling are inter-related.
