Question
Define the following :

Answer

(1) Nucleophilic bimolecular reaction $\left( SN ^2\right)$ : The substitution reaction in which a nucleophile reacts with the substrate and the rate of the reaction depends on the concentration of the substrate and the nucleophile is called a nucleophilic bimolecular reaction.

Example :
$\underset{\text { substrate }}{ CH _3 Br }+\underset{\text { nucleophile }}{ OH ^{-}} \rightarrow CH _3 OH + Br ^{-}$

(2) $SN ^1$ reaction: The substitution reaction in which a nucleophile reacts with the substrate and the rate of the reaction depends only on the concentration of the substrate is called nucleophilic unimolecular or first order reaction or $SN ^1$ reaction.
