In $1914,$ under the chairmanship of Patrick Gides, a well-known sociologist and town planning scholar in Britain, the first post-graduate course in sociology and teaching was started at the University of Mumbai in India.
From $1924,$ Dr. Govind Sadashiv Dhurya, a sociologist from India, served as the Chairperson of the Postgraduate Department of Sociology, University of Mumbai till $1947.$
