Question
Differentiate between biodegradable and non-biodegradable substances with the help of one example each. List two changes in habit that people Differentiate between biodegradable and non-biodegradable substances must adopt to dispose non-biodegradable waste, for saving the environment.

Answer

Biodegradable substances
Non biodegradable substances
Biodegradable substances are those which can be broken down by microorganisms and insects etc into substances which are taken up by soil and are not harmful to the environment.
Non biodegradable substance does not decompose naturally and are harmful to the environment and create pollution.
Biodegradable substances are made up of natural ingredients.
Non biodegradable substance are made up of natural ingredients.
For example, garden waste of non greasy food waste which is decomposed by soil organisms, make up the humus and do not persist in the environment for long.
Example: substances like plastic are not broken down by soil organisms and persist in the environment for long.
Two changes:
  1. Non biodegradable waste should be recycled and should be disposed by landfills in a way so that they do not affect the quality of soil.
  2. Also certain non biodegradable wastes should be burned by combustion.
