Question
Distinguish between a sigma and a pie bond.
✓
Answer
$\sigma$ bond : The covalent bond formed by overlapping on head on or axial overlapping on internuclear axis is known as $\sigma$ bond. $\pi$ bond : The bond formed by collateral overlapping is known as $\pi$ bond. In this the axis of orbitals are perpendicular to axis and internuclear axis. $\sigma$ bond is stronger than $\pi$ bond as in $\sigma$ bond the degree of overlapping is more than $\pi$ bond strength of bond $\alpha$ extent of overlapping $\pi$ bond always exist with $\sigma$ bond.
