Question
Distinguish between mean deviation and standard deviation.

Answer

Both these measures of dispersion are based on each and every unit of the series. But, they differ in the following respects:
  1. In the calculation of mean deviation, signs of deviation (+) or (-) are ignored, but in the calculation of standard deviation, signs of deviations are not ignored.
  2. Mean deviation can be calculated from different averages (Mean, Median and Mode) but the standard deviation is always calculated from the mean.
