Question
Elements of group $16$ have lower ionization enthalpy values compared to those of group $15$ elements. Explain why?

Answer

Group $15$ elements have extra stable, half-filled p -orbitals with outer electronic configuration $\left(n s^2 n p^3\right)$. Therefore, more amount of energy is required to remove an electron compared to that of the partially filled orbitals $\left(n s^2 n^4\right)$ of group $16$ elements of the corresponding period. Hence, elements of group 16 have lower ionization enthalpy values compared to those of group $15$ elements.
