Evaluate the following determinant:
$\begin{vmatrix}\text{x}&-7\\\text{x}&5\text{x}+1 \end{vmatrix}$

Answer

Let $\text{A}=\begin{vmatrix}\text{x}&-7\\\text{x}&5\text{x}+1 \end{vmatrix}$
$|\text{A}|=\text{x}(5\text{x}+1)+7\times\text{x}$
$=5\text{x}^2+\text{x}+7\text{x}$
$=5\text{x}^2+8\text{x}$
Hence, $|\text{A}|=5\text{x}^2+8\text{x}$
