Question
Explain Baeyer’s test giving one example.
✓
Answer
$i.$ During hydroxylation of alkenes the purple colour of $KMnO_4$ disappears.
$ii.$ Hence, such reaction serves as a qualitative test for detecting the presence of double bond in the sample compound. This is known as Baeyer’s test.
e.g. As propene contains a double bond, it reacts with alkaline $KMnO_4$ to give colourless propane$-1,2-$diol as product. Therefore, the purple colour of alkaline $KMnO_4$ disappears.
