Question
Explain Bronsted-Lowry theory of acids and bases.

Answer

Acid : According to Bronsted-Lowry theory acid is a substance that donates a proton $\left( H ^{+}\right)$to another substance.
Base : According to this theory base is a substance that accepts a proton $\left( H ^{+}\right)$from another substance. For example,
$\underset{\text { Acid }}{ HCl _{(\text {aq) }}}+\underset{\text { Base }}{ NH _{3(\text {aq) }}}{ } \rightleftharpoons NH _{4(\text {aq})}^{+}+ Cl _{(\text {aq) }}^{-}$

Since $HCl$ donates a proton it is an acid while $NH _3$ accepts a proton it is a base.
