Question
Explain effective atomic number.
✓
Answer
Effective Atomic Number (EAN): The total number of electrons possessed by the central metal ion in the complex including those gained by it in bonding is called effective atomic number of central metal ion. For example, in $\left[ Co \left( NH _3\right) 6\right]^{3+}$, the number of electrons in $Co ^{3+}=24(27-3)$, each $NH _3$ donates 2 electrons so $2 \times 6=12$. Therefore, effective atomic number is $24+12=36 . EAN = Z - ON +2( CN )$
