Question
Explain homoleptic and heteroleptic complexes.

Answer

  1. Homoleptic complexes: The complexes in which metal ion is bound to only one type of ligands are called homoleptic complexes.
e.g. In $[Co(NH_3)_6]^{3+}$, only one type of ligand, $NH_3$ surrounds the $Co^{3+}$ ion.
  2. Heteroleptic complexes: The complexes in which metal ion is surrounded by more than one type of ligands are called heteroleptic complexes.
e.g. In complex $[Co(NH_3)_4Cl_2]^+$, there are two types of ligands, $NH_3$ and Cl attached to $Co^{3+}$ ion.
