Question
Explain in detail about surface rainfall by stating the types of rainfall.

Answer

  • The types of rain are as follows.
$(1)$ Surface or elevation precipitation
$(2)$ Heat transfer or convective precipitation
$(3)$ Cyclones
$(1)$ Surface or altitude rain:
  • If a mountain or a high region comes in the way of moist winds coming from the seas, this wind collides with the windward side of the mountain and rises.
  • As the rising air cools, clouds of moisture form in it.
  • Which causes more rain on the windward slopes of the cooling mountain.
  • This is called elevation or surface rainfall.
  • The wind blows and becomes less humid.
  • They descend to the windward side of the mountain crossing.
  • The air pressure on the descending winds increases and it becomes warmer.
  • As a result, the wind blows less on the windward side of the mountain.
  • This low-rainfall side of the mountain is called the rainforest region.
  • The coastal region of Kankan and Malabar on the west side of the Western Ghats in India is windy.
  • So there is more rain.
  • The southern highlands on the east side of the Western Ghats are windless.
  • So there is less rain.
  • Mumbai, located on the windward side of the Western Ghats, receives about $200\ cm$ of rainfall during the year.
  • Pune, a short distance on the windward side of the Western Ghats, receives less than $80\ cm$ of rainfall.
