Question
Explain in detail about surface rainfall by stating the types of rainfall.
✓
Answer
The types of rain are as follows.
$(1)$ Surface or elevation precipitation
$(2)$ Heat transfer or convective precipitation
$(3)$ Cyclones
$(1)$ Surface or altitude rain:
If a mountain or a high region comes in the way of moist winds coming from the seas, this wind collides with the windward side of the mountain and rises.
As the rising air cools, clouds of moisture form in it.
Which causes more rain on the windward slopes of the cooling mountain.
This is called elevation or surface rainfall.
The wind blows and becomes less humid.
They descend to the windward side of the mountain crossing.
The air pressure on the descending winds increases and it becomes warmer.
As a result, the wind blows less on the windward side of the mountain.
This low-rainfall side of the mountain is called the rainforest region.
The coastal region of Kankan and Malabar on the west side of the Western Ghats in India is windy.
So there is more rain.
The southern highlands on the east side of the Western Ghats are windless.
So there is less rain.
Mumbai, located on the windward side of the Western Ghats, receives about $200\ cm$ of rainfall during the year.
Pune, a short distance on the windward side of the Western Ghats, receives less than $80\ cm$ of rainfall.
