Question
Explain the conscious mind and unconscious mind in short.

Answer

According to Freud, the responsible factors for abnormal behaviour are - depressed feelings, emotions and bad experiences in the unconscious mind. He said that conflicts between conscious, subconscious and unconscious mind leads the individual towards abnormality. Conscious mind is marked with events and experiences which a person is completely aware of while repressed feelings which are challenging, sad and insulting are stored in unconscious mind.

To explain the concept of conscious and sub conscious mind, Freud has given the example of an iceberg. When we see the floating iceberg in the sea, only a small part which is coming out of the watercan be seen, while the major part remains inside the sea. According to him, the part of the ice-berg whichfoats inside the water is unconscious mind while the part floating above the sea is conscious mind.
The unconscious matter constantly seeks expression in some or the other way. It comes out in the form of fantasies, dreams, slip of tongue, nail biting, involuntary movement of leg and doing the same activity again
