The Civil Disobedience movement jay got momentum when thousands in different parts of the country broke the salt law by manufacturing salt. Worried by the developments, the colonial government began arresting the Congress leaders one by one. This led to violent clashes in which many were killed.
A month later, when Mahatma Gandhi himself was arrested, industrial workers in Sholapur attacked police posts, municipal buildings, law courts and railway stations - all structures that symbolised the British rule.
The colonial government got frightened. It adopted a policy of brutal repression. Peaceful satyagraha were attacked, women and children were beaten and many people were arrested. In such a situation, Gandhiji decided to call off the movement and entered intoa pact with Irwin on 5th March, 1931.
The lukewarm response of certain sections of the Muslims also forced Gandhiji to call off this movement.
