Question
Explain the following:
$PCl_5$ is ionic in nature in the solid state.

Answer

This is because in solid state $PCl_5$ exists as $[PCl_4]^+\ [PCl_6]^-$ in which cation is tetrahedral and the anion is octahedral. On melting, these ions become free to move and hence it conducts electricity.
