Question
Explain the following terms giving a suitable example in each case:
  1. Ambident ligand.
  2. Denticity of a ligand.
  3. Crystal field splitting in an octahedral field.

Answer

i. Ambident ligand: a unidentate ligand which can co-ordinate to the central metal atom through more than one co-ordinating bond.e.g. $\mathrm{NO}_2{ }^{-}, \mathrm{SCN}^{-}$.
ii. The number of donor atoms in ligating groups is known as denticity of that ligand. e.g. in $\mathrm{C}_2 \mathrm{O}_4{ }^{2-}$ denticity is 2 .
iii. Crystal field splitting in an Octahedral field: The splitting of d-orbitals under the influence of approaching ligand is known as crystal field splitting for example for $\mathrm{d}^4$, configuration is $\mathrm{t}_{2 g}{ }^3 \mathrm{eg}^1$ /or diagrammatic representation.
