The understanding during the Gupta period was traditionally divided into four characters.
  • Brahmins were in the highest position in the society.
  • Foreigners became a part of Indian society.
  • The practice of slavery was prevalent in the society.
  • The main food of most people was milk and its products and also wheat, barley, rice, fruits, vegetables.
  • Men wore dhoti, tunic and turban and women wore sari.
  • People used cotton and silk cloth.
  • Women and men used leaves, masks, perfumes and cosmetics.
  • Festivals like Sharadpurnima, Kaumudi Mahotsav, Vasantotsav, Holi, Diwali, Dussehra etc. were celebrated with great fanfare.
  • Entertainment equipment included animal bird hunting, boat, chariot and horse racing, as well as gambling, dancing, music, etc.
  • The place of women in society was high, independent and dignified.
  • The king was responsible for maintaining the social order.
  • Calling foreign warriors in the army semi-Kshatriyas or "fallen Kshatriyas".
