Question
Explain the term anodization with example.
Give one use of it.

Answer

i. The process of coating metals such as aluminium and copper with a thin and strong layer of their oxides by electrolysis is called anodizing process. In this process, copper or aluminium article is used as anode.
ii. Example: When aluminium is anodized, the thin layer of aluminium oxide is formed which restricts the contact of aluminium metal with oxygen and water. This prevents further oxidation of aluminium. This protection can be further enhanced by making the oxide layer thicker during anodization process.
iii. Use: It helps to prevent corrosion of metals.
