Question
Explain the two methods of drawing a random sample.

Answer

Ans. Two methods of drawing a random sample are:
  1. Lottery method: Under this method, all the units of the population are allotted separate numbers which are written on separate slips of identical shapes and sizes. Now, these slips are put in a box or container and thoroughly mixed. Then, the selection is made randomly from the box. The slips drawn or selected will constitute the random sample.
  2. Table of random numbers: Under this method, the desired random sample is obtained by using Table of Random Numbers prepared by different statisticians. Tippett's Random Numbers are popularly used. The procedure adopted is as follows:
  1. All the units of the population are allotted separate numbers in a serial order.
  2. Take up any page from the random number table and pick up therefrom, the required number of 'Random Numbers' in an orderly manner (row-wise or column-wise).
  3. (iii) Select those units of the population which bear the number picked up from the table. These numbers will constitute the desired sample.
