  • Introduction :
    • Receiving and giving information is natural not only among human beings but also among all living souls on the earth.
    • Primitive man, when he was in barbarian State, he did not have any language or words yet through expressions, signs and indication messages were communicated.
    • Thereafter gradually culture civilization started and due to development of science and technology, with the use of language and signs, through various media function of communication became easy and swift.
    • Various dealings of human beings and transactions of trade and commerce are not possible without communication.
  • Meaning of Communication :
    • In Gujarati language, Communication is called 'pratyayan'.
    • It is derived from the original term 'Communis' and 'Communi Care' in latin language.
    • Communication means exchange or messages through written or verbal signs, indication, gestures, facial expressions, body posture, paintings, dance or any other form.
    • Messages or information is received from one source and is sent to another sources, is communication.
    • Thus, in communication there is mutual interaction of instructions, information, ideas, feelings, emotions between two or more people.
  • Definition of Communication :
    • Communication is such a process as it takes place among people in which the knowledge, ideas, sentiments, feelings of the sender of information is broadcaster or conveyed through proper signs and proper media.
    • It impresses the receiver of information and his behavior changes.
    • He establishes and maintains relations with him.
    • Communication means exchange of thoughts, opinions and information through speech, writing or through sign.
    • Communication is a process through which we insert our thoughts in the mind of others.
  • Characteristics (Nature) of Communication :
    • On the basis of the definition of communication its characteristics are noted as below
      • Objective activity :
    • The objective of exchange of information is to create specific understanding in other party and to impress him. so that some change may occur in his behavior and to lead him to specific direction.
      • Two - way activity :
    • Information is given and received. It does not include only imparting of information but it includes receiving of information too.
    • It is a two way activity.
      • Non-verbal communication :
    • Without using words, information is communicated through facial expressions, body posture, signs, etc. e.g.
    • Hand is used to call some body or to say good bye, or to tell go.
      • Verbal Communication :
    • Messages are sent using spoken language or written language and information is an exchange that is called verbal communication e.g. lectures, newspapers, circulars. Telephonic talk, radio talk etc.
      • Broadcasting or Telecasting through various media :
    • With the development of science and technology communication is carried out through television, telephone, radio, internet etc
      • Broad Concept :
    • Knowledge, thoughts, idea, understanding and feelings of emotions of sender are included in communication with the sender of information.
  • Conclusion :
    • Communication has a wider idea.
    • It is inevitable in every sector of human life.
    • Communication is in the centre of the development of human civilization.
    • It is not only in the center of the development of trade and commerce.
    • But also entire human civilization is centered round it.
