Question
Food does not pass through the digestive system by 'gravity'. This is clear from the fact that we can digest the food even if we are lying down. Explain the logic behind the passage of food through our digestive system.

Answer

The lining of the alimentary canal has muscles that contract rhythmically so that the food can be pushed down through it easily. This action is known as peristalsis. These movements of muscles help the passage of food through the gut.
