Question
Give an example to prove that a multi-purpose project creates social, economic and environmental imbalances.
✓
Answer
Multi purpose projects do create a social, economical, and environmental imbalance. Such projects disturb the social life of the native or local people. Most of their land comes under dam construction which sometimes force them to migrate to other places. This break their social ties and bonding with the existing place and people.
The local economy is also affected by the construction of multipurpose projects. The people who are dependent on forests for livelihood suffer losses due to clearance of forests. Even farming is affected as land come under construction which lowers crop production.
There is also environmental imbalance as forests get destroyed and cultivable land also comes under construction. Leakage in dams may submerge adjoining areas. Aquatic fauna migration also gets affected. Even wild life due to loss of forests become extinct.
The biggest example is the floods in Maharashtra and Gujarat in 2006 which had occurred because of the aggravation of floods on opening the doors of dams.
