Question
Give reason: Group $16^{th}$ elements have lower ionisation enthalpy compared to group $15^{th}$ elements. Write two uses of dioxygen.

Answer

Group $15$ elements have extra stable, half$-$filled $p-$orbitals with outer electronic configuration $(ns^2 np^3).$ Therefore, more amount of energy is required to remove an electron compared to that of the partially filled orbitals $(ns^2 np^4)$ of group $16$ elements of the corresponding period. Hence, elements of group $16$ have lower ionization enthalpy values compared to those of group $15$ elements.
two uses of dioxygen:
$1.$ Dioxygen is important for respiration to sustain animal and aquatic life.
$2.$ It is used in the manufacture of steel.
