Mahabalipuram is a harbour city located $60\ kms$ away from Chennai and is named after the Pallava king Narsima Varman I, who was popularly known as ‘Mahamalla’.
It is also known as the ‘City of Seven Caves’.
These temples are also callled ‘ Shore Temples’ and are carved out of a single rock.
At present, there are only five rock-cut temples.
Two rock-cut temples have submerged in the sea. These chariot shaped temples have been named after the Pandavas.
The biggest is dedicated to Yudhistra and the smallest to Draupadi.
There is an amazing statue of Lord Vishnu in a smiling pose.
There is also an idol of Goddess Durga killing Mahisasura.
Mahabalipuram was a famous port in the ancient times.
