Mahabalipuram is a harbour city located $60\ kms$ away from Chennai and is named after the Pallava king Narsima Varman I, who was popularly known as ‘Mahamalla’.
  • It is also known as the ‘City of Seven Caves’.
  • These temples are also callled ‘ Shore Temples’ and are carved out of a single rock.
  • At present, there are only five rock-cut temples.
  • Two rock-cut temples have submerged in the sea. These chariot shaped temples have been named after the Pandavas.
  • The biggest is dedicated to Yudhistra and the smallest to Draupadi.
  • There is an amazing statue of Lord Vishnu in a smiling pose.
  • There is also an idol of Goddess Durga killing Mahisasura.
  • Mahabalipuram was a famous port in the ancient times.
