Question
How is mode determined in a continuous series?

Answer

In a continuous series, mode is determined by three methods as given below:
  1. Inspection Method: If the items are concentrated in one class, we determine the modal class and then to determine the exact value of mode, we apply the given formula
$\text{M}_0=\text{l}_1+\frac{\text{f}_1-\text{f}_0}{2\text{f}_1-\text{f}_0-\text{f}_2}\times\text{C}$
  1. Grouping Method: If values are concentrated at more than one value, then a grouping table and an analysis table is prepared and then to know the exact value of the mode, we apply the formula given above.
  2. Graphical Method: The given data is represented with the help of histogram. In the given representation, the top end points of the rectangle with the largest height are joined with end points of adjacent rectangles and from the point of intersection, a perpendicular is dropped. The point at which this perpendicular meets the X-axis is the modal value.
