Question
Innocence of Kaikeyi

Answer

In "अनपराद्धा अत्रभवती" the excerpt from "प्रतिनाटकम्" the great poet Bhasa exalted the character of Kaikeyi. In the original story, Kaikeyi has been portrayed as a merciless and cruel lady. But Bhasa has portrayed her as foresighted, innocent and a lady with good intention. Being foresighted, she knows about the curse inflicted upon Dashratha and its consequences. Thus to protect Rama from the possible danger, she demanded exile for him. She knew that the death of the king Dashratha was certain. So to protect Rama, she was ready to tolerate the pain of widowhood, disgrace and condemnation from all relatives. After consulting with scholars like Vasistha and Vamdeva, she demanded exile for Rama. But she claimed that due to nervousness, she spoke $14$ years instead of $14$ days.
