Paliya has a special place in the architecture of Gujarat. It is the unique architecture of Gujarat.
The monument or pillar built in (Paliya) memory of the hero who was martyred in the battle while standing in front of the enemies is called 'Paliya'. The brave women who had performed Jauhar or Sati, their Paliya is also made, it is called 'Sati's Paliya'. Each Paliya is associated with the story of a hero's sacrifice.
The Paliyas of warriors are built on the battlefield or at the place of their death. The Paliyas were worshipped once in a year as per the date of their death.
A fair is also held at Paliya. People applaud the sacrifice of the hero by putting vermilion on the Paliya. The best examples of Paliya in Gujarat include Suraj Kunwarbano Paliyo of Bhuchar Mori near Jamnagar and Hamirji Gohil Paliya near Somnath temple.
