India is a secular state which does not make discrimination between the citizens on the grounds of religion and imparts equal treatment to citizens of every religion or sect.
→ There is no official religion of the state and it does not govern the state as per tenets of any religion.
→ There is separation of state and religion and the state observes neutrality in religious matters. However, the state has been given power to intervene in the religious matters for promoting social reforms, public morality and maintaining law and order. The state has the right to acquire property of any religious denomination in the larger public interest by paying adequate compensation.
→ Citizens have been given right to profess, practise and propagate any religion of their choice.
→ Religious denominations have been given right to set up educational institutions and charitable trusts and acquire property.
