$x^2 - 16 = 0$
$\Rightarrow x^2 - 4^2 = 0$
$\Rightarrow (x + 4) (x - 4) = 0$
Since $x + 4 = 0$ or $x - 4 = 0$
then $x = -4$ or $x = 4$
