Solve the following quadratic equation by using formula method:
$x^{2}-2x-3=0$

$a=1, b=-2, c=-3$
$b^2 - 4ac = (-2)^2 - 4(1)(-3) = 4 + 12 = 16$
$x = \frac{-(-2) \pm \sqrt{16}}{2(1)} = \frac{2 \pm 4}{2}$
$x = 3$ or $x = -1$
