We know that,
Area of rectangle = Length $\times$ Breadth
Therefore,
From the figure, we have,
Area of $1^{\text {st }}$ recatngle $=5 \times 1=5 \mathrm{~cm}^2$
Also,
Area of $2^{\text {nd }}$ rectangle $=4 \times 1=4 \mathrm{~cm}^2$
Therefore,
Total area $=5+4=9 \mathrm{~cm}^2$
